This is a midi rendering of a trio for english horn, harp and piano composed in July of 2023. Score and parts are available.
This piece is built on textures based on shifting poly-metrical figures. For example in the opening, the overall meter is 3 and there is a simple 3-note ostinato in the left hand of the piano, playing on the beat while the right hand layers in a two-note pattern on the off-beats, then adds notes one at a time until there are 6, then begins subtracting again. Variations of this process occur throughout the piece in both the harp and piano parts while the english horn floats melodically above the texture.
Out of print for several years, the rich, jazzy, piano-driven “Brown Loop” by Duval Timothy gets the reissue treatment. Bandcamp New & Notable Oct 18, 2020
